HL Deb 20 May 1993 vol 545 cc98-9WA
Lord Judd

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What action they propose to take in respect of parents who on grounds of principle keep their children home from school on test days.

Baroness Blatch

Parents have no right to withdraw children from the National Curriculum, including its associated assessment arrangements. It is in the interests of the children to take the tests and in the interests of parents to gain reliable information from the tests about their children's progress.

Responsibility for securing regular attendance at school lies with LEAs and schools. It is for them to determine how to respond to individual instances of unauthorised absence, taking account of all the circumstances.
