To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will make a statement on the progress being made in implementing the patients charter.

The national health service has made considerable progress in implementing the patients charter since it came into effect on 1 April 1992. The patients charter has stimulated many innovative ideas and good practice at a local level and the efforts of the NHS should be recognised. From April 1993 the patients charter has been extended to primary health care with all family health service authorities producing their own local charters.
