HC Deb 20 May 1993 vol 225 cc282-3W
Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the average increase in output per head in manufacturing and non-manufacturing(a) since 1979 and (b) from 1963 to 1973.

Mr. Nelson

Between 1979 and 1992, manufacturing output per head increased by 63.4 per cent. which is equivalent to an increase of 3.8 per cent. compounded over the 13 years.

In the 10 years from 1963 to 1973, manufacturing output per head increased by 50.7 per cent. This is equivalent to an increase of 4.2 per cent. compounded over the 10 years.

Output per head in non-manufacturing industries is not measured separately.
