HC Deb 20 May 1993 vol 225 cc279-80W
Mr. Watson

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many principals of further education colleges in Scotland received bonus payments following the colleges' incorporation in April; how such payments were authorised; and if he will make a statement.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

[holding answer 17 May 1993]: Information on bonus payments to principals is not held centrally.

From 1 April 1993 the employers of further education college staff, including principals, are boards of management. Remuneration is for them to determine.

Mr. Chisholm

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland who authorised payment of bonuses to further education college principals in the year to 1 April.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

[holding answer 17 May 1993]: Prior to 1 April 1993, principals of further education colleges were employees of education authorities. Any bonuses paid would be for them or college councils to authorise, having regard to their statutory powers.

Mr. Chisholm

(2) from which budgets bonuses to further education college principals came in the year prior to 1 April.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton
