From 1 April 1993 the employers of further education college staff, including principals, are boards of management. Remuneration is for them to determine.

§ Lord James Douglas-Hamilton[holding answer 17 May 1993]: Prior to 1 April 1993, principals of further education colleges were employees of education authorities. Any bonuses paid would be for them or college councils to authorise, having regard to their statutory powers.
