§ Mr. Austin MitchellTo ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what proposals he is considering for protection in the media of the personal privacy of prominent persons.
§ Mr. BrookeWe intend to introduce legislation, on the lines recommended by Sir David Calcutt, to criminalise certain acts of physical intrusion into personal privacy with intent to obtain information or other material with a view to publication. We have also accepted Sir David's recommendations for further consideration to be given to four other measures bearing on privacy. We will set out our views on his recommendation for a statutory press complaints tribunal in responding to the National Heritage Select Committee's report on privacy and media intrusion.
