(2) how many times, in each of the last five years, the Crown Office building, the old royal high school, in Edinburgh has been used; by whom; and for what purpose;

(3) how many staff are employed and at what cost to maintain and keep secure the Crown Office building, the old royal high school, in Edinburgh.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The old royal high school buildings presently house the office of my noble and learned Friend the Lord Advocate and the Crown Office. The buildings are in daily use as the functioning headquarters of the public prosecution system in Scotland. Included in the complex is the debating chamber used for sittings of the Scottish Grand Committee and occasionally hired by outside agencies as listed in the table. Expenditure on maintenance and upkeep of the whole Crown Office complex in 1992–93 amounted to £76,000. A permanent security presence is maintained at an annual cost of £77,000. Separate figures for the cost of the debating chamber, which is in use on fewer than six days each year, are not kept.
