To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage if he will estimate the employment in television in each of the past 10 years in(a) the BBC, (b) regional commercial broadcasters, (c) independent production companies and facilities and (d) in total.

The number of staff employed by the BBC in each of the past 10 years is recorded in the BBC's annual reports, which are available in the Library. Information on(b), (c) and (d) is not held centrally; but I understand some 13,800 were employed by the ITV companies in 1982 and 11,100 in 1992.
