HC Deb 18 May 1993 vol 225 cc144-5W
Mr. Fatchett

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the value of research and development support to Rolls-Royce plc from his Department in the last financial year; under what programmes the support was provided; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Aitken

In 1992–93, payments made by my Department to Rolls-Royce plc and its subsidiary companies for research and development totalled £42,869,505, through some 175 active contracts. Details of these are not held centrally and could be provided only at disproportionate cost.

The subjects of the nine contracts placed during the year were research into: cables, electrical connectors and associated items for naval use; high pressure gas cylinders for naval use; future ship propulsion systems; and aero engine future technology.
