To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the estimated financial value of the contribution provided by her Department in England to pre-school play groups in respect of each pupil per season for a year.

The Department does not make grants directly to individual playgroups.
Total grant aid from central Government to the Pre-school Playgroups Association (PPA) in 1993–94 is over £1.5 million, of which £570,000 is given by the Department towards PPA's headquarters costs and implementation of a major reorganisation. The PPA also takes part in the Department's small grants scheme, in which small capital grants are dispersed to playgroups.
