HL Deb 18 May 1993 vol 545 cc85-6WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What discussions they held on East Timor with the President of Portugal during his visit to Britain, and whether they will seek to persuade the Indonesian Government to accept the visits to East Timor by UN monitors, proposed by the UN Human Rights Commission.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

We assured President Soares of Portugal during his visit to Britain last month that we welcomed the resumption of the Portuguese-Indonesian dialogue on East Timor, and supported the UN Secretary-General's efforts. With our EC partners, we are encouraging the Indonesian Government to cooperate with the relevant UN human rights rapporteurs.
