HC Deb 17 May 1993 vol 225 c42W
Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much is scheduled to be contributed by his Department to United Nations peacekeeping operations for the current year; and if he will indicate the level of contribution paid out to date.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The United Kingdom contributes 6.373 per cent. on the scale of assessment to the United Nations peacekeeping budgets.

We have paid our 1993 contributions 1 January to 31 March 1993 as follows:

UNEF/UNDOF (Golan Heights) 1,068,752.00
UNIFIL (Lebanon) 4,659,637.00
UNAVEM (Angola) 1,514,184.00
UNIKOM (Iraq/Kuwait) 1,207,777.00
ONUSAL (El Salvador) 720,386.00
UNTAC (Cambodia) 19,499,962.00
UNPROFOR (Ex Yugoslavia) 20,311,627.00
ONUMOZ (Mozambique) 8,822,136.00
Total 57,804,461.00

The total United Kingdom assessed contributions for financial year 1993–94 were estimated at 1 April to be 145 million. Total figures are, however, difficult to predict accurately, as much depends on how operations develop, and exchange rate fluctuations.

Recently approved further appropriations mean additional United Kingdom assessed contributions of ․9 million for UNPROFOR, ․15 million for UNTAC and ․1.3 million for UNIKOM for calendar year 1993. Formal requests for payment are received from the United Nations throughout the calendar year and paid promptly.

We also contribute forces to UNTAC, MINURSO— western Sahara—UNPROFOR, UNIKOM and UNFICYP, Cyprus. Ministry of Defence costs for financial year 1993–94 for these forces were estimated at 1 April at £105 million. These estimates are also subject to revision as operations develop.
