HC Deb 17 May 1993 vol 225 cc51-2W
Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the social work diploma courses available in further and higher education colleges in Wales; how many people qualified from such courses in the last two years; and what information he has on how many of those obtaining qualifications were Welsh speakers.

Sir Wyn Roberts

Outside the University of Wales, information collected from further education student records shows that the following colleges of higher and further education introduced a two-year diploma of social work course in 1992–93:

Students enrolled on first year in 1992–93 (provisional)
Institution Numbers
North East Wales Institute with Gwynedd Technical College 39
Cardiff Institute of Higher Education with Bridgend College 123

The FESR does not record the numbers qualifying or the numbers of Welsh speakers.

The diploma in social work, validated by the Central Council for the Education and Training of Social Work, replaces the programmes leading to the certificate in social service and the certification of qualification in social work.
