HC Deb 17 May 1993 vol 225 c53W
Mr. Alex Carlile

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what provisions there are in Wales for providing teachers with advice and training on dealing with epileptic students; and if he will make a statement.

Sir Wyn Roberts

The Welsh Office has issued no specific advice to teachers on dealing with epileptic students. However, organisations such as the National Society for Epilepsy, the Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation and the British Epilepsy Association have produced booklets and a resource pack of educational material. The Welsh Epilepsy Association is giving consideration to providing information through the medium of Welsh.

A Welsh Office commissioned report by the Wales Council for the Disabled on epilepsy generally was produced in October 1991, which includes reference to the position in schools. The Welsh Office has been involved in seminars run by the Wales Council to consider the findings and implications of that report.
