To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what consultancies have been awarded by his Department to Rolls-Royce and Associates.

Of some 280 current contracts between my Department and Rolls-Royce and Associates, only one is specifically for consultancy services. This was placed in 1992, and requires the preparation of reports on nuclear safety at the Clyde submarine base, Faslane. The hon. Member will appreciate that a full investigation of all past and present contracts to determine whether any consultancy services were required could be carried out only at disproportionate cost and effort.
