To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many(a) men and (b) women were held on remand in custody in prisons in England and Wales as at 1 May.

Responsibility for this matter has been delegated to the Director General of the Prison Service, who has been asked to arrange for a reply.

Letter from Derek Lewis to Mr. Tom Cox, dated 12 May 1993: The Home Secretary has asked me to write to you directly in reply to your Parliamentary Question about the population of remand prisoners in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales. The latest available information is for 31 March 1993 and shows that 9,687 male and 309 female untried and convicted unsentenced prisoners were held in Prison Service establishments in England and Wales. No prisoners were held in police cells at this time.
