HC Deb 13 May 1993 vol 224 c549W
27. Mr. Burden

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his assessment of the effectiveness of improved street lighting to combat crime.

Mr. Jack

Research for the Home Office has shown that improved lighting can reduce crime when introduced as part of a package of crime prevention measures. By itself, better street lighting appears to have no direct effect on crime levels, but it is helpful in reducing the fear of crime and making people feel safer.
