To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what progress is being made towards a peace settlement between the Palestinians and the Israeli Government; and if he will make a statement.

The bilateral negotiations between Israel and the Arab parties resumed in Washington on 27 April. We welcome the resumption. We continue to urge the parties to negotiate seriously to produce early visible progress towards lasting settlement on the basis of United Nations Security Council resolutions 242 and 338.
