HC Deb 11 May 1993 vol 224 cc406-7W
Mr. Jim Cunningham

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what plans he has to improve teacher morale.

Mr. Boswell

The Government recognise the need to maintain teacher morale and are committed to ensuring that teaching is viewed as an attractive profession. Current recruitment is buoyant; vacancies are low; fewer than 1 per cent. leave the profession each year for paid employment outside education. The restructuring of teachers' pay in the coming September will give classroom teachers the prospect of earning up to £30,441 a year.
