HC Deb 11 May 1993 vol 224 cc387-8W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many suicides recorded in England and Wales in the past five years have been attributed to causes related to suffering from low frequency tinnitus and hum; and how many patients are currently receiving therapy for the conditions through the NHS.

Mr. Sackville

The Department of Health has no information on the reasons for individual people's suicides. A diagnosis of tinnitus was recorded against an estimated 500 patient episodes of treatment in the hospital episode system in England during 1989–90, the latest year for which figures are available. The ninth edition of the international classification of diseases, on which the 1989–90 data are coded, does not distinguish between low frequency and other varieties of tinnitus.
