HC Deb 11 May 1993 vol 224 cc401-2W
Mr. Dalyell

To ask the Prime Minister if he will discuss British-Russian co-operation on nuclear safety with President Yeltsin; and if he will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

I have no plans to meet with President Yeltsin specifically to discuss nuclear safety issues. However, if the opportunity arises, I will emphasise our concern about nuclear safety in Russia and our wish for continuing co-operation in this area.

Mr. Cousins

To ask the Prime Minister if he will list the projects, and the funding committed thereto, by the European Community and the United Kingdom to assist Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan in respect of the storage and disarmament of nuclear material and facilities.

The Prime Minister

The Government have made a commitment to supply Russia with nuclear weapons transport vehicles and special containers to help with the dismantlement of that country's surplus nuclear warheads; the total programme is expected to cost over £30 million. We have no such programmes of assistance for Belarussia, Ukraine or Kazakhstan. The European Community has not committed funding to any of these states for this purpose.
