Mr. Darling

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the number of oil fields which were subject to the payment of petroleum revenue tax in each year from 1983 to 1992–93 as compared to the total number of oil fields in production during the same period.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 10 May 1993]: The numbers of oil and gas fields with a liability to petroleum revenue tax and the total number of fields in production since 1984 have been as follows:

Number of fields with PRT liability Number of fields in production
1984 15 35
1985 16 42
1986 17 49

Number of fields with PRT liability Number of fields in production
1987 17 55
1988 15 62
1989 16 72
1990 20 81
1991 20 82
1992 17 94

The information on fields with liabilities is not available for 1983, when 32 fields were in production.

Mr. Darling

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the number of oil fields that would be subject to the payment of petroleum revenue tax in each year between 1993–94 and 1997–98.

Mr. Dorrell

[holding answer 10 May 1993]: The number of oil and gas fields with a liability to petroleum revenue tax in 1993 is estimated to be approximately 20. Forecasts are not made for future years.
