HC Deb 11 May 1993 vol 224 cc386-7W
Mr. Galloway

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will publish a list and description, together with the source, of all the non-pharmaceutical forms of treatment for HIV and AIDS upon which there has been correspondence with her Department since 1987; what encouragement she has given to the testing of non-pharmaceutical regimes in the cases of asymptomatic antibody positive subjects; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. Sackville

This information is not available.

The clinical trials supported as part of the Government's commitment to HIV and AIDS research are organised by the Medical Research Council, which receives its grant-in-aid from the office of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. The M RC has convened an AIDS therapeutic trials committee, which includes patient representatives, to formulate a strategy for clinical trials.

Mr. Galloway

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much her Department has spent since 1987 on treatments for HIV management, AIDS and AIDS management, manufactured by companies other than the Wellcome Foundation; and if she will list those companies and the products used.

Dr. Mawhinney

This information is not available. The Department allocates money to health authorities to purchase services for people with HIV/AIDS. These allocations cover the costs of prescribing a range of drug treatments, but it is for individual clinicians to determine what treatment is appropriate for each patient.
