HC Deb 10 May 1993 vol 224 c330W
15. Ms Eagle

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what support has been given to women's cricket through the Sports Council.

Mr. Key

The Sports Council of Great Britain's grant aid to the Women's Cricket Association in 1992–93 was a total of £45,000. The Sports Council has also worked closely with the association to help it improve its future programmes and policies.

18. Mr. Orme

To ask the Secretary of State for National Heritage what proposals he has to promote cricket in schools and adequate provision for the funding of such a programme.

Mr. Brooke

The Sports Council is providing £130,000 per year for 1992–93 and 1993–94 to enable the National Cricket Association to employ 10 part-time regional cricket development officers, one of whose tasks is to promote links between schools and local cricket clubs. The council also gives £16,000 a year to the English Schools Cricket Association. In addition, three awards totalling £117,000 have already been made by our new Sportsmatch scheme to projects which will benefit youth cricket.

Responsibility for national curriculum physical education rests with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Education.
