HC Deb 07 May 1993 vol 224 c271W
Mr. Llew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on his deregulatory review of existing controls on toxic and hazardous waste; and which bodies he is consulting as part of the review.

Mr. Maclean

The Government are considering regulations which will implement directive 91/689/EEC on hazardous waste and which will replace the Control of Pollution (Special Waste) Regulations 1980. This will take account of deregulation, any views of the industry task forces and the need to avoid unnecessary controls.

The directive requires agreement on a list of hazardous waste. Successive drafts of the list prepared by the European Commission have been circulated for comment to a wide range of representative bodies. Consultation on revisions to the regulations is planned for later in the year.
