HC Deb 05 May 1993 vol 224 cc103-4W
Ms Walley

to ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will take steps to ban the sale and advertising of devices to evade radar speed camera technology.

Mr. Leigh

The use and advertising of such devices is already subject to a number of controls.

The use of radar speed trap detectors constitutes an offence under the Wireless Telegraph Act 1949.

Under the Vehicles (Excise) Act 1971 it is an offence to obscure the registration number of a vehicle. It is a common law offence to incite a person to commit an offence, for example, in an advertisement.

The British code of advertising practice, administered by the Advertising Standards Authority requires that advertisements should contain nothing which is in breach of the law.

I understand that the Department of Transport is to strengthen existing regulations to make it illegal to sell reflective number plates of the type designed to evade camera technology.
