(2) how many nationals of the former Yugoslavia are living in the United Kingdom; if he will list the numbers by country of origin; and how many have entered the United Kingdom since 1990.

In the period January 1992 to March 1993 inclusive, around 6,300 nationals of the former Yugoslavia—excluding dependants—applied for asylum in the United Kingdom, 2,220 at ports on arrival and 4,080 after entry. The large majority of these applications are still under consideration.
Comprehensive information on recent applications to vary leave is not yet available. For information on decisions in 1992 on variation of leave applications I refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave him on 22 March 1993, column 448.
Information about appeals against refusals of variation of leave applications is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
