§ Mr. MorleyTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what guidance the United Kingdom Government have received from the EC secretariat of CITES regarding wildlife trade with Italy.
§ Mr. Maclean[holding answer 30 March 1993]: The CITES secretariat, which is not linked to the EC, informed us in February of the suspension of the Standing Committee's earlier recommendations that sanctions should be taken against Italy. The United Kingdom was an observer when the Committee met earlier this month and accepted the secretariat's advice that sanctions could be lifted permanently.
