HC Deb 31 March 1993 vol 222 cc221-2W
Mr. Llwyd

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make it his policy to adopt the draft international declaration on violence against women into British law.

Mr. Jack

The Government take very seriously the need to tackle violence in society and have taken a number of steps in recent years against violence against women. A summary was given in my reply to the hon. Member for Redcar (Ms Mowlam) on 29 March at columns103–04. We have strongly supported the development of the draft United Nations declaration on the elimination of violence against women, and share its aims of encouraging internationally both condemnation of violence against women and commitment to its elimination. Any implications of the final declaration for the law in this country will be considered carefully.
