To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps he is taking to ensure that Gloucestershire constabulary is staffed to the level recommended by the chief constable; and if he will make a statement.

Under the present system, approvals of bids for extra posts for police forces are given on the basis of relative need. As a result of current economic circumstances, no increases have been approved for the coming financial year.
