To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, pursuant to his answer of 24 March,Official Report, column 604, on costs of European science projects, if he will list the annual costs of the four largest European social science research projects.

Full information is not available. The following are the four largest social science research projects within Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded centres which have received European Community (EC) funding and which have a European dimension:

  1. 1. The ELSNET (Network of Excellence in Language and Speech), operated by the ESRC-funded Research Centre in Human Communication at the University of Edinburgh, is wholly supported by European Community (EC) funding at a cost of £162,000 per annum.
  2. 2. The ESRC-funded Research Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics received £118,000 from November 1991 to August 1992 from the EC for its Technical Assistance Programme to the Russian Government.
  3. 3. The ESRC-funded Research Centre for the Study of African Economies at the University of Oxford attracted direct funding from the EC of £63,000 for a project "Sixth European Development Fund: MSc teaching at Addis Ababa University".
  4. 4. An ESRC-funded project entitled "Farm Structures and Household Pluriactivity in Europe" is being undertaken by Arkleton Trust Research Ltd. over a period of three years and nine months, at a cost of £45,932 per annum.
