To ask the Prime Minister what detailed measures he is taking to satisfy himself that Her Majesty's Customs and Excise possess the expertise in timber technology to assess whether imports come from legal or illegal sources in relation to CITES.

In their enforcement of the CITES controls Her Majesty's Customs and Excise are assisted by a wide range of qualified experts from outside the Department. Where the identification of particular specimens of timber and their sources is necessary Customs will continue to seek the advice of qualified experts in this field.
