§ Mr. Stewart[holding answer 30 March 1993]:A local community midwife must have the appropriate profession-al qualifications required by section II of the Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors Act 1979, as amended, for admission to part 10 of the register maintained by the United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting (UKCC). In addition under the council's rules regulating the practice of midwives, registered midwives are required to attend courses of instruction from time to time in accordance with these rules.
