To ask the Secretary of State for Education what are the latest statistics on the number of(a) students from other EC countries and (b) non-EC students attending United Kingdom universities; and if he will estimate the income this brings to the universities.

There were 19,500 students from other EC countries and 43,900 students from non EC countries studying in United Kingdom universities in the academic year 1991–92, when estimated fee income received by universities from these students was £274 million.
