HC Deb 29 March 1993 vol 222 cc103-4W
Mr. Bowis

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what powers he has in respect of transgenic animals.

Mr. Charles Wardle

The use of all vertebrate animals in scientific procedures which may result in pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm is controlled by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. Under the Act, the Home Office regulates not only the development of transgenic animals, but also the breeding of any such animals which may suffer harmful effects as a result of their transgenic status.
