HC Deb 29 March 1993 vol 222 c89W
Mr. Murphy

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (I) if he will meet representatives of Gwent county council and Torfaen borough council to discuss the proposed imports of toxic waste going from Germany to the ReChem plant at Pontypool;

(2) if he will meet representatives of the community of New Inn, Pontypool, to discuss the import of toxic waste from Germany going to the ReChem plant at Pontypool;

(3) if he will make representations to the European Commission concerning the transport of toxic waste going from Germany into Wales.

Mr. Gwilym. Jones

I am aware of the concerns of local authorities and the local community. The Government have already asked the German Government to ban the proposed shipment of hazardous waste from Hamburg. Our policy of self-sufficiency in final disposal for developed countries has been incorporated into the EC waste shipments regulation which will come into operation in May 1994. In these circumstances, I do not think that a meeting would be appropriate.
