HL Deb 29 March 1993 vol 544 c37WA
Lord Kilmarnock

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many National Health Service managers were on a "senior manager" contract in 1989 and 1992 respectively.

Baroness Cumberlege

There were some 4,120 staff employed on senior manager contracts in Great Britain at 30th September 1989 and 13,880 at 30th September 1991 (the latest date for which figures are available). In addition, there were some 820 and 840 employed on general manager contracts at 30th September 1989 and 30th September 1991 respectively. Management still accounts for less than 1.7 per cent. of the NHS workforce. Information for Northern Ireland is not available centrally.
