HL Deb 29 March 1993 vol 544 c33WA
Lord Stanley of Alderley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (i) which member states of the European Community have subsidised their potato growers during the 1992 season and how much in total, this has amounted to, and
  2. (ii) whether the United Kingdom Government will do the same for British potato growers, and if not, why not.

Earl Howe

During the 1992 season, France, Italy and Spain have provided assistance to their potato growers but we do not know the sums involved. In Great Britain, the Potato Marketing Board has operated the statutory guarantee arrangements. The cost to the Government is expected to be in the region of £1.5 million.
