§ Dr. GodmanTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many dentists and dental surgeons are in practice in(a) Inverclyde, (b) Strathclyde and (c) Scotland as a whole who (i) treat NHS patients, (ii) treat private patients only and (iii) until 1991 treated NHS patients but have ceased to do so.
§ Mr. Stewart[holding answer 15 March 1993]: In order to be accepted onto a health board dental list dentists must undertake to provide general dental services under national health service arrangements. No information is available about dentists who treat private patients only. The number of dentists registered at 31 December 1992 in each of the health board areas within Strathclyde region and the total number of dentists registered in Scotland is contained in the table. Information for individual local government district and regional areas is not available. According to information held by health boards—February 1993—since 1991 one general dental practitioner in Fife health board area and one in Tayside health board area have left their dental lists because they no longer wish to provide national health service dental services.
