HC Deb 25 March 1993 vol 221 cc711-2W
Mr. Ainger

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment which areas the Government proposes for designation as special areas of conservation under directive 92/43/EEC.

Mr. Maclean

The Government have not yet proposed any sites for designation as special areas of conservation under directive 92/43/EEC. The country nature conservation agencies and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee are at present undertaking the preliminary scientific analysis necessary before the identification of areas for inclusion in the United Kingdom's national list from which areas to be designated as special areas of conservation will be selected.

Mr. Ainger

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what progress the Government have made towards putting in place the legal and administrative provisions necessary for implementing directive 92/43/EEC and for safeguarding United Kingdom terrestrial and marine habitats covered by the directive.

Mr. Maclean

The Government's proposals for implementing the directive will be published in due course.

Mr. Ainger

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether any areas in Cardigan bay, the Bristol channel or St. George's channel are being considered for designation as special areas of conservation under directive 92/43/EEC.

Mr. Maclean

No specific areas have so far been identified.
