HC Deb 24 March 1993 vol 221 c616W
Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if she will publish figures showing the number of teenage pregnancies in the United Kingdom in 1990, 1991 and 1992; and what were the pregnancy rates per 1,000.

Mr. Sackville

The number of conceptions to women aged under 20 in England and Wales during 1990, which resulted in live births, stillbirths or legal abortions were 115,055. This represents a rate of 69.0 per 1,000 women in the age group 15 to 19. Data for 1991 and 1992 are not yet available. Comparable data on numbers of conceptions in a calender year are not available for Scotland or Northern Ireland. However, the relevant information for Scotland and Northern Ireland that is available is shown in the table.

Dr. Mawhinney

The amounts spent on the two campaigns were:

  • Drugs and solvent abuse parental awareness campaign £2,558,765
  • Solvent abuse parent awareness pilot campaign £1,025,209 (estimated)
