Mr. Cryer

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the current number of nuclear installations inspectors in post; what vacancies exist; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. McLoughlin

On 1 March 1993, 172 nuclear installations inspectors were in post in the Health and Safety Executive. The published planned target for 1 April 1993 is 179. Figures given are for full-time equivalent posts (part-timers are counted as half units).

Nine new inspectors are being appointed.
