HC Deb 22 March 1993 vol 221 cc468-9W
Mrs. Anne Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) what estimate was made, in considering the future of St. Pancras hospital for tropical diseases, of the implications for the incidence of tropical diseases of the amount of travel by British citizens to tropical countries and the ability to make early diagnosis;

(2) what plans she has to provide specialist facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of specialist diseases in London and the south-east of England when St. Pancras hospital for tropical diseases is closed;

(3) what change is proposed in the number of beds and availability of specialist staffing for the diagnosis and treatment of tropical diseases in London.

Dr. Mawhinney

In our document, "Making London Better" we proposed moving the services currently provided at the London hospital for tropical diseases onto the rationalised UCH/Middlesex site. This proposal was recommended in the Tomlinson report and has the support of the main parties concerned. It will bring the hospital much closer to its associated academic institution, the London school of hygiene and tropical medicine, with consequent clinical and research benefits.

This proposal is subject to established consultation procedures.
