HC Deb 22 March 1993 vol 221 cc514-5W
Dr. Strang

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what arrangements are currently in place for the administration of milk quotas in Wales.

Mr. David Hunt

My Department and the Intervention Board executive agency are responsible for administering milk quotas in Wales. Certain functions are currently performed on our behalf by the Milk Marketing Board for England and Wales.

Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the number of farms in Wales for which dairy produce represents more than 10 per cent. of their production, or an equivalent threshold for which information is available, on a county basis.

Mr. David Hunt

The information is not available in the form requested.

The following table shows the number of holdings in Wales for which over 10 per cent. of the total standard gross margin (SGM) of the holding is attributable to dairy cows. The SGM is a financial measure based on the output of an enterprise less its variable costs.

County Number of holdings
Powys 530
Gwynedd 549
Dyfed 3,201
Clwyd 980
South Glamorgan 110
Mid Glamorgan 89
West Glamorgan 92
Gwent 354
Wales 5,905
