To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what measures he proposes to ensure that all road users are familiar with the latest version of the highway code; and if he has any proposals to introduce periodic re-testing of drivers.

In addition to the widespread media coverage given to the launch of the new highway code, the publisher, HMSO, has made extensive arrangements for marketing the code throughout the United Kingdom. These activities were so successful that 1 million copies of the code were sold in the first 10 days. To maintain awareness of the code, we are including a leaflet advertising the new edition with vehicle licence reminders sent by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency to more than 20 million licence holders over a 12-month period.

I have no plans to introduce the periodic re-testing of drivers.
