To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many complaints were made by patients to health authorities during the last year for which figures are available; and how many of these complaints were upheld.

The total number of written complaints received in 1990–91 by health authorities in respect of their hospital and community services was 37,350. Information on the outcome of each complaint is not held centrally.
