HL Deb 22 March 1993 vol 544 c1WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the total number of breast implants carried out under the National Health Service in 1992; at what cost these were carried out and how many followed mastectomies.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Cumberlege)

According to the Hospital Episode System the latest unpublished estimate of the numbers of consultant episodes for plastic operations on the breast in England, including prosthesis of the breast, is 660, in 1989/90. Information on the cost of these operations and whether or not they followed mastectomy is not held centrally.
