§ Mr. Howard"Public Bodies 1992" identifies 3,287 appointments to public bodies sponsored by my Department. Of these nearly 2,400 appointments are to valuation tribunals, members of which are appointed by local authorities. For the remainder, the public appointments unit is usually asked to supply names for consideration alongside names offered by other sources, including professional and representative groups and self-nominations. No central record is maintained of the sources of names of appointees. In some cases appointees were nominated from more than one source but, from the information readily available, it appears that the following appointments were principally from names supplied by the public appointments unit:
