To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the difference in the level of Government grant and business rates per head of the population and per household between Hampshire county council, Basingstoke and Deane district, and Newcastle metropolitan authority.

The amounts of revenue support grant (RSG) and income from the uniform business rate (UBR) per head of resident population and per household for 1993–94 for the authorities requested are as follows:

"Public Bodies 1992" identifies 3,287 appointments to public bodies sponsored by my Department. Of these nearly 2,400 appointments are to valuation tribunals, members of which are appointed by local authorities. For the remainder, the public appointments unit is usually asked to supply names for consideration alongside names offered by other sources, including professional and representative groups and self-nominations. No central record is maintained of the sources of names of appointees. In some cases appointees were nominated from more than one source but, from the information readily available, it appears that the following appointments were principally from names supplied by the public appointments unit:
