To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of(a) 30 to 40-year-olds, (b) 40 to 50-year-olds and (c) 50 to 60-year-olds apply for employment for (i) skilled and (ii) unskilled positions, but are not hired.

Information regarding those dismissed within the past financial year from a job held for more than five years is not available. The most recent available estimates relating to dismissals are given in the following table.

Information relating to skilled workers by age group is not available. Total numbers made redundant by age groups in Great Britain are available from the quarterly "Labour Force Survey" which has been undertaken quarterly from spring 1992. The latest information available is from the spring and summer 1992 surveys and is as follows:
