To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many vacant places there are at the Castington young offenders institution; and if he will make a statement.

On Friday, 12 March 1993, there were 45 unfilled places at Castington young offender institution. The establishment has a capacity of 300 places, but this has been reduced temporarily to 240 because some staff have had to be deployed on duty elsewhere in the Prison Service estate.
