HL Deb 16 March 1993 vol 543 c83WA
Lord Marlesford

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the additional cost of providing a cycle track alongside a new urban dual carriageway, a new motorway, a new single carriageway, and a new underpass for an existing urban dual carriageway.

The Earl of Caithness

It would cost in the order of £250,000 per kilometre to construct a new cycleway 3 metres wide on one side only of an existing road, excluding the costs of land acquisition and of statutory undertakers' plant and equipment. If provided alongside a motorway, there would need to be some form of fencing to segregate the cycle route from the motorway. Construction of a new underpass would cost in the range of £300,000 to £400,000 where statutory undertakers' work are not extensive. In appropriate circumstances, an overbridge may prove cheaper.
